This year’s Host Steve Backley:

For over a decade, Steve was one of Britain’s most consistent and popular athletes and established himself as one of the all-time greats of his sport. A constant member of the British athletics team, standing on podiums and setting world records, Steve is the only British track and field competitor to win medals at three different Olympic Games – Barcelona, Atlanta and Sydney. After seven Gold medals, three world records, two Olympic silver medals and one bronze, Steve Backley  was awarded an MBE in 1995 , and an OBE in 2002, after being the first British athlete to successfully win four consecutive European Championship titles.

Burnley Community Sports Awards have been established to recognise and celebrate the contributions and achievements of local people and communities to sport, physical activity, and community development. The awards pay tribute to those who show dedication at a range of levels or those who work tirelessly to support individuals or community clubs, for the love of the sport or their community.

This year’s event takes place on Thursday 18th July 2019 at the Mechanics Theatre in Burnley.

Nominations for each year’s awards are taken between February -April and are then shortlisted down to three nominees in each of the following categories:

  • Service to Underrepresented groups
  • Volunteer of the Year
  • Coach of the Year
  • Club of the Year
  • Community Project of the Year
  • Lifetime Achievement
  • Primary School of the Year
  • Secondary School of the Year
  • Young Achiever of the Year

All shortlisted nominees are invited along to the event. Winners of all categories go forward to the Lancashire Sports Awards hosted by Active Lancashire.
