Celebrating those making an impact in sport and active communities

Burnley Community Sports Awards are back this October at the Burnley Mechanics Theatre with host Colin Jackson CBE.

Burnley Community Sports Awards have been established to recognise and celebrate the contributions and achievements of local people and communities to sport, physical activity, and community development. The awards pay tribute to those who show dedication at a range of levels or those who work tirelessly to support individuals or community clubs, for the love of the sport or their community.

Nominations for this year’s awards will need to be submitted by 6th August 2021, the nomination process is really simple, and if you need any help, just call us on 01282 477 167.

Your nominations are then shortlisted down to three nominees in each of the following:

Coach/Instructor of the year

This award is presented to coaches and instructors throughout the County who have given up their time and invested their expertise, selflessly, to help those interested in sport to develop their talent and to realise their full potential.

Club of the year

This award is given to an active and well run club (Sports club, community organisation or informal group) that has undertaken great work in running development programmes which attract and retain participants, particularly those from under-represented groups, and which help their members to develop their sports potential and promote active lifestyles.

Rising Star

We are looking for a young performer already showing potential signs to excel in their sport.

Primary School of the Year

This award is given to a Primary School that has excelled in school sport and physical activity over the last 12 months. Community links and the impact of sport has made them stand out over the year.

Secondary School of the Year

This award is given to a Secondary School that has excelled in school sport and physical activity over the last 12 months. Community links and the impact of sport has made them stand out over the year.

Volunteer of the Year

This award is given to the volunteer, aged 16 or above, who has given up their free time to promote and support the engagement in sport and physical activity, and made a significant impact over the past 12 months. This volunteer can be from a traditional sports background or from a wider community organisation setting.

Individual Contribution to Active Communities

We are looking for an individual who has worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic to keep people in their local community active. A person who has gone the extra mile and made it possible for people to be active over the last 12 months.

Contribution to Active Communities

We are looking for a project or community group who have beat all the odds to keep people in their community active despite Covid 19. A project that has successfully adapted their offer and gone above and beyond over the last 12 months.

The Host Colin Jackson

Colin Jackson CBE, the former Olympic 110m hurdler will be joining us to celebrate your achievements across Burnley in sports. Considered one of the most successful hurdlers of all time, Colin won an extraordinary 44 consecutive victories during a 12-year period and held the world record time of 12.91 seconds for 13 years.

During his career he represented both Great Britain and Wales and won an incredible 21 medals, including 12 golds and 8 silver. He was a two-time World and Commonwealth champion, an Olympic silver medallist, World Indoor champion and went undefeated at the European Championships for 12 years.

As one of Britain’s greatest ever athletes he was appointed an MBE in 1990 and was later promoted to OBE and eventually CBE in 2003 for his services to the sport.

Colin has had a successful career as an inspirational coach, a TV presenter, presenting during the Olympics and has appeared as a host on BBC since retiring from athletics at the age of 36. He remains the 60 metres hurdles world record holder.

All shortlisted nominees are invited along to the event. Winners of all categories go forward to the Lancashire Sports Awards hosted by Active Lancashire.
